A decent free keyword tool that I use is: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.
Just type in the keyword and it will give you some useful keywords suggestions along with the number of searches each keyword gets. However, there's still a lot of guesswork involved as it doesn't tell you how much competition each search term gets, which is quite annoying.
